12-Step Recovery Program for Addiction

At The Way Recovery, we guide our patients along the 12-Step Recovery Program, a very effective peer support process, that has helped countless people recover from addiction. This process is incredibly flexible and can cater to many different types of addictions, granting the ability to achieve and maintain abstinence from their addiction.

What is the 12-step recovery program?

The process was first developed by Alcoholics Anonymous for the treatment of alcohol abuse. Since then, the 12 steps have adapted to other specific addictions including drugs and gambling. It is with the help of a supportive community and professionals that the 12-step recovery program can help patients achieve and maintain abstinence from substance abuse and behavioural addiction.

Every 12-step process is based on spiritual principles. However, when we talk about a higher power, it does not need to be a specified religion. The 12-step recovery program can help people of all different religions, spiritual practices and even the non-religious. What it does require is the belief in something greater than oneself. This can be God, the universe or any higher power that fits your spirituality.

The 12-step program for addiction treatment:

  1. Admitting powerlessness over the addiction.
  2. Believing that a higher power can restore us to sanity.
  3. Deciding to turn our will and lives over to the care of a higher power.
  4. Taking an inventory of oneself.
  5. Admitting to our higher power, oneself, and other people the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Being ready to have our higher power correct any shortcomings.
  7. Asking our higher power to remove those shortcomings.
  8. Making a list of the people we harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Make direct amends to these people wherever possible, except if it would injure them or others.
  10. Continuing to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, we promptly admit it.
  11. Seeking to improve our conscious contact with our higher power through prayer and meditation.
  12. Carrying the message of the 12 Steps to others in need
